"Adagio," Public Radio East's long running evening classical music program has a new feature on Tuesday evenings called "The Complete Work." Tuesdays at 8:00pm, PRE music director Sefton Wiggs will feature a work that seldom receives an airing in its entirety.
Russian composer Reinhold Gilere wrote only three symphonies and the first two are of standard length. The third, however, is a blockbuster at more than an hour and a half. Inspired by ancient Russian folklore, the symphony is called "Ilya Murometz" after a mighty legendary hero. The four movements are as follows: Wandering Pilgrims; Ilya Murometz and Solovie the Brigand; Festival in the Palace of Prince Vladimir; and Heroic Deeds and Petrification Ilya Murometz. We'll hear the Royal Philarmonic Orchestra conducted by Harold Farberman. That's Tuesday, July 22 at 8:00pm with host Sefton Wiggs on the "The Complete Work," a new feature on the Tuesday evening "Adagio" on 89.3 Public Radio East.
